Each unit is small and discreet, taking up very little space on your ceiling. The smoke alarm will automatically activate when it is attached to the mounting bracket; there are no pull-tabs or switches – everything is automatic. A flashing red LED indicator light signals four modes of operation: Standby (flash every 40-45 seconds), alarm mode (flash every 1.5 seconds), Hush mode (flash for 1 second every 8 seconds), and memory set (flash rapidly when the test button is pressed). When the unit reaches low battery condition, approximately 10 years after power up, it will chirp to indicate that the alarm needs to be replaced. You can use a simple tool, such as a screwdriver, to deactivate the smoke detector, stopping the low battery chirp and making it safe for disposal. The sealed-in battery will power the smoke alarm for its complete 10-year life. This alarm uses ionization sensing technology. Ionization sensing alarms may detect invisible fire particles (associated with flaming fires) sooner than photoelectric alarms. Photoelectric sensing alarms may detect visible particles (associated with smoldering fires) sooner than ionization alarms.
